Media Electronic Media Installation

Jurgen Faust

At the Cleveland Institute of Art I taught Media/Electronic Media Installation classes which served as an introduction to and exploration of media installation including electronic media in the arts. Lectures covered concepts and presentations of artists working in various capacities with media and electronic media in installations. Course work had been hands-on practise of techniques and concepts presented in lecture, discussion of readings, and critique of student projects. This class will involve two separate media/electronic media assignments centred around the idea of the ‘media as a message’ and ‘interactivity’.

Students worked with different material, media, electronic media using video, sound and will work with digital editing and composing and projections to prepare the two installations. We used Photoshop, Premiere, and Director or Flash and Sound forge to create these installations with images, text and sound.

Assignment B which covers the time until midterm critique will be focused on reflection of media, mainly using material and objects and the students will learn to plan, design and use textual descriptions of an installation.

Assignment C is focused on new media and will be focused on the topic “interactivity” and includes the use and the application of new media. The students will learn how to use a digital program like Director 8.0 to prepare an interactive installation. Students will also learn how to apply various input devices in an installation.
